Work placements, internships and graduate recruitment

Give them the opportunity

You know that Leeds produces well-rounded graduates − you're one of them!

Please consider hiring one of our bright students.

One the most effective ways that alumni can help students is to give them the chance to gain valuable work experience that enhances their future employability.

You could help them to experience an industry and its culture, develop transferable skills and grow their networks.

At the same time, your organisation will benefit from the specialist skills, new ideas and enthusiasm of current students.

Work placements

The majority of students at the University of Leeds can undertake a placement year. Students can work for 12 months as part of their degree between years 2 and 3.

Placements are usually paid and are usually advertised September-June each year.

Internships

Internships tend to last about 8-12 weeks and usually take place over the summer.

Interns often work on a defined project and are given an insight into the wider operation of the host organisation.

The University manages a number of exclusive internship programmes for Leeds students with companies through the Leeds Internship Programme.

Employing Leeds graduates

You can advertise your graduate roles directly to Leeds students via the Careers Centre. Upload job details directly via this online form .

To discuss your vacancies and ways you could promote them further please contact the Employer Team.

Recruitment fairs and events

You could also send representatives to recruitment fairs and events. They're a great way to raise awareness of your organisation and to discuss opportunities in more detail with potential applicants.

Full details about upcoming fairs and how to attend are on the Careers Centre website.

Mentoring

What's it like?

"Doing a degree is like building a bike - you learn about all the different components, and how things work; doing an internship is like riding the bike - you learn how fast you can take on the world! Fantastic experience, I've learnt so much more than just the degree offered, and feel much more prepared for the working world!"

2nd year MDES Product Design

"My internship gave me valuable insight into how a small local business works and confidence in pursuing a career in that sector."

2nd year BA Geography student

"It is a great feeling to think that the work I completed during my internship will help the organisation for years to come"

2nd year BA Graphic and Communication Design

Leeds Alumnus Gerard Savva, Managing Director of Magpie Comms, has recruited many Leeds students

"The talent pool at the University gets bigger and better year-on-year and the students we have placed over the past four years have exceeded our expectations with their abilities and skills. This has often led to us offering further employment beyond their placement period.

In 2014, on a recommendation from the Careers Centre, we entered the National Undergraduate Employability Awards and scooped the Highly Commended title for the placements we offer. For the most part, we dedicate this accolade to the brilliant service and support we have received from the Careers Centre and the talent of all the students we have placed over the years."

Gerard Savva (Graphic Design 2006)
